Y2 Trevose areas of learning for Spring 1

omcleod 13th January 2016

Trevose Class is already into the second week of an interesting and varied half term of learning. In maths, we will be learning about number and place value; mental addition and subtraction; problem solving, reasoning and algebra; measurement; geometry; the properties of shapes; position and direction; measurement; mental multiplication and division; and fractions, ratio and proportion. In English, we are learning how to write stories with recurring literary language; and how to structure poetry, particularly in the form of calligrams. In Science, we are learning all about electricity: the uses of electricity; everyday safety; and making simple circuits. In Topic, we are learning about the culture of ancient Egypt, including traditions, homes, food, leisure activities, sport, clothes and religion. We will also be producing art in an Egyptian style: writing in hieroglyphics; and creating our own Egyptian gods or goddesses. In addition, we will be studying the work of local sculptor Barbara Hepworth. Our learning in Life Skills will be all about etiquette, including: writing a letter of thanks to Father Christmas; table manners and cutlery; opening doors; body language during conversation; taking turns, patience, fairness and cooperation; and etiquette in public, such as in class, at church, etc. In P.E, we are choreographing dance routines and learning to play hockey and basketball. R.E, this half term, is all about Judaism; and in Personal, Social and Health Education, we have already made New Year”s resolutions; and the children have considered what they want to be in the future. We will soon be discussing what you need to do to achieve your dreams and goals; and how you will know when you’ve achieved them! We will also consider failure and how to deal with it. In Music, we will be regularly practicing our singing with Mrs Watkiss; and in Computing, we are learning how to create algorithms to make simple games and programmes.  All in all, we have a busy and exciting few weeks ahead of us!
